Dental Veneers: Everything You Need To Know

Smile confidently with the help of dental veneers.

A smile is the most heart-felt facial expression. It warms the heart and communicates without saying anything. It gives a strong first impression and boosts confidence. What if your teeth are discolored or chipped, though? Would you still be able to smile confidently?

Yes, with the help of dental veneers.

What Are Dental Veneers?

Referred to as dental porcelain laminates or porcelain veneers, these are thin ceramic shells that permanently bond with your front teeth to cover stains and cover their crooked appearance. Color, size, shape, and length are customized based on the needs of the affected teeth to replicate a natural look. Dental veneers are either made of porcelain or resin. Of these two, porcelain can resist stain and has a light-reflective quality.

Dental veneers effectively repair discoloration caused by medicine stains, excessive fluoride, root canal treatment, or big resin fillings. They are also suitable for chipped, fractured, worn-out, misaligned, and uneven teeth by closing the gaps between teeth. It is possible to apply veneers on a single tooth or a group of teeth at the same time.

What Are the Benefits of Dental Veneers?

Easily Whitens Teeth

Dental veneers provide a long-term option for teeth whitening, lasting from 7 to 20 years. Because veneers are stain-resistant, there is no need to be concerned about discoloration.

Improves the Appearance of Your Teeth

Veneers improve minor problems such as chips, discoloration, gaps, and misalignment. They do not displace your teeth; instead, they are bonded to the front of your teeth to cover these minor problems.

Replaces Damaged Enamel

Acid reflux, overbrushing, and eating highly acidic foods wear out enamel, causing erosion and abrasion. These damages are often treated with the use of veneers.

How Is It Done?

It takes three dental visits to complete the treatment:

1. Consultation

Proper diagnosis and planning are the first steps in the procedure. The dentist will carefully inspect your teeth, take a dental X-ray, and assess if you would require other dental treatments first or if you’re already a good candidate. They will then explain how the procedure is done, its benefits, and its dangers.

2. Preparation

Your second dental appointment will involve the preparation of your teeth before the bonding procedure. The dentist will restructure the surface of your tooth and shave a thin layer of enamel away, equal to the thickness of the dental veneers that will be placed. Temporary veneers are applied while waiting for the laboratory to make the veneers from models created by the dentist.

3. Bonding

The bonding of the veneer to the tooth is the third and last step in the procedure.

  • The dentist will take out the temporary veneers.
  • They will then assess the fit, color, and shape of the appliance. It will be trimmed and repositioned before applying cement to ensure a proper fit.
  • Your teeth will be polished, cleaned, and etched in preparation for the bonding procedure to make them stronger.
  • After that, the cement will be placed directly onto your tooth.
  • The cement is activated with a special light, so the veneer will adhere to it more quickly.
  • The dentist will remove excess cement, make adjustments, and check your bite to see that everything is in place.

Aftercare of Placed Veneers

You may feel a slight discomfort right after the procedure, but this is completely normal. You might also feel a little roughness; this should subside after several days. Otherwise, ask the dentist to smoothen it out.

There is no specific aftercare intended for dental veneers. You may immediately resume eating and chewing normally. Maintain good oral habits and care for your veneers like your regular teeth. To make the most of your veneers, make sure to follow these precautions:

  • Do not chew hard objects (ice, fingernails, etc.). Do not use your teeth to open items.
  • Cut hard-to-chew foods into smaller pieces or use your back teeth when chewing.
  • Use a mouthguard when needed.

How Much Are Dental Veneers

Your location and the amount of work required will determine the cost of veneers, which can run from $1,000 to $2,000. It is not frequently covered by insurance because it is considered a cosmetic operation.
