Need to Get to a Dentist Now Due to an Emergency? Contact Century Dental!

Have you experienced waking up in the night because of the feeling of severe pain in your teeth? Do you know the first thing that you should do? Do you call your dentist, or do you head to the emergency room? Most people do not know what to do in these common scenarios, possibly causing further damage or injury. It is very important to recognize a dental emergency when it happens and to know what steps to take.

What is a Dental Emergency?

Dental emergencies are instances where immediate attention is required to alleviate severe pain, prevent further risks of infection, or save a tooth at risk. Some dental emergencies are easily apparent. However, there are some which cannot be easily known. To help you determine if your situation requires emergency dental care and immediate treatment, we have listed below some of the more common dental emergencies.

Cracked or Knocked-Out Teeth

While small chips and minor fractures in your teeth can wait, if your tooth has already been knocked loose or has a severe crack, then seeking immediate emergency dental care is a must. In case of a knocked-out tooth, a quick reaction can actually make it possible for your dentist to reinsert and preserve your tooth. Handle the tooth carefully and do not touch the root. Rinse it without scrubbing and try to place it back in the socket if possible. If not, place the tooth in a small container and quickly go to the dentist.

Bleeding Gums

Bleeding is never a good sign. However, a bit of bleeding after brushing or flossing may not require immediate dental attention. On the other hand, if the bleeding is excessive and recurring, it is a sign that emergency dental care is badly needed as this could be a symptom of periodontal disease. By getting immediate dental attention, treatment can start as early as possible, allowing you to keep your gums, teeth, and bones healthy.

Teeth or Jaw Pain

While teeth or jaw pain may be hard to diagnose whether it’s an emergency or not, experiencing severe and lasting pain is a sign that you must contact your dentist. This is especially true when you are experiencing swelling, fever, loss of taste, or difficulty in swallowing along with the pain. In such instances, immediate examination of your mouth by the dentist is required as you may already have an infection.

What to Do in Case You Need Emergency Dental Care

In cases like these, the first thing to do is to call your dentist’s office. If it’s beyond office hours, there is usually an emergency number provided by your dentist. If you don’t have it, try looking for one on their website or their online pages. If the problem can wait, leave a message and visit them at the office the next day.

However, should there be no way for you to connect to your dentist, you can instead go to the nearest emergency room. The staff would be able to determine if you need a dentist and could help you relieve the pain by giving proper medications.
